We caught up with Alexandra Velez, Key Account at Daikin Portugal, to talk about this project. Pestana Group bought a Daikin EWYD4504ZXR unit for Vila Sol Hotel, in Algarve, a 4-star hotel with 140 rooms, conference rooms and public areas.

Flexible system for both cold and hot water

It all started with a request for a top eﬃciency unit from the project designer, who performed an energy audit to ensure the client had the highest eﬃciency. The solution was replacing the existing chiller with a Daikin 4Z. The hotel has diﬀerent operating needs, so having a ﬂexible system for both cold and hot water at the same time, plus recovery for hot sanitary water, was fundamental. […]

Factory testing

We wanted to see the unit tested so we could prove its performance. This chiller, with integrated inverter screw compressor, provides the best eﬃciency in the market, and it was great having it tested with customers in the factory. […] It was also good for them to see the manufacturing process, and have engineers answering their questions about controls and integration with the diﬀerent BMS systems.”

TRUE or FALSE? When full load is not required, it’s best to shut down units in multiple chiller plants

Well, the answer is false. Thanks to the high efficiency in part load operation with inverter, running all the chillers in the plant in part load (even if they have “fix-speed” pumps on primary circuits) can be more efficient than shutting down part of the chillers. The Inverter or VDF (Variable Frequency Drive) is an electronic power component, by varying the frequency of the motor power supply; it modulates the compressor rotational speed (RPM) and in such a way that is controls the compressor capacity.
